Such an intimate, bracingly realistic film. Demme's attention to detail is breathtaking. Anne Hathaway truly gives a brilliant breakthrough performance, transitioning from cheese to real acting with this film. She will almost undoubtedly join the Oscar family because of this film. A truly extraordinary Altman-esque ensemble is built out of mostly unknowns, but Demme's masterful hand elevates an otherwise standard indie film to a truly moving work of art. In addition to Hathaway's surprising and arresting performance, the supporting talents of Rosemarie DeWitt and Debra Winger are half of the allure of the film. All in all, it is a truly encouraging step forward for the American cinema. |

Astonishing. Riveting. Raw. Demme forsakes his usual visual flair for a catch-as-catch-can doc style...without sacrificing the emotional pyrotechnics. The rehearsal dinner scene nearly suffocated me. And, for those familiar with Demme's work, this pic is a veritable photo album of his past collaborators/mentors/fave performers. Welcome, young scribe Lumet. And welcome BACK, Ms. Winger. And Bill Irwin, why don't you work WAY more, man?! |

Surprisingly good. I never had any intention of seeing this film, but I'm glad that I did. It's surprisingly compelling, because it throws the audience into this man's life, but it doesn't try to manipulate us into liking him. It shows us his highest highs and his lowest lows, with full confidence that we will side with him in the end. Not because we like him (which, we inevitably do), but because what he is doing is right and good and he truly deserves to win his legal case. This has been a solid year for Greg Kinnear so far, and I really enjoyed watching him in this film. His desperation and will to fight is admirable. We cheer for him when he succeeds. And we feel his heartache when he loses what he loves most. And the whole thing makes us think about what we would do, and how we would act, if we were ever thrust into this battle of insurmountable odds. Would we fight? Or would we accept the $30 million, and just go away? I know the story of the intermittent windshield wiper, and its creator, might not seem to be all that compelling to you (Lord knows it didn't compel me at all, before yesterday). But, this is a great film, and a definite must-see. I have a feeling that this will be around come awards season. |

I don't think this movie has very much to say about drug addiction; however, if drug addiction is merely a metaphor for another kind of addiction--addiction to our families, no matter the harm they may cause us--then this film might be a little more enlightening than it otherwise seems. And while it avoids veering into after-school special territory, the actual wedding itself seems like a misstep. It's kind of like stepping into a live-action version of the cover of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," which should be fun but somehow isn't. And the wedding's Indian theme just seems like orientalist racism, so that's a strike against it. |

The best spy movie in years.Ridley scotts delivers with respect what happens in the middle east and in al quida. The perfomances are excellent. The only problem seems to be that the theatrical version i guess for marketing reasons is 40 min shorter than the original one.The one that ridley wanted. But people are allergic to middle east movies and in big movies so they didn't let him realease that.Otherwise i definetely recoommend it. |

A male version of Devil Wears Prada, this isn't really a 4 star film but as an ex-journalist and film critic I can't help but appreciate the dichotomy our anti-hero must face. This is a comedy based on the spiral of embarrassment - each gag leads to more and more awkward situations so that you end up watching the anti-hero's actions through your fingers. Essential relaxation film for anyone who's ever worked in media. |

The best film that Jonathan Demme has done since "The Silence of the Lambs." It's a wonderful movie about Kym (a drug addict in rehab played by Anne Hathway) returning home for her older sister's wedding. The film is vibrant and full of life; the kind of project that doesn't try to be accessible by streamlining. It just breathes, with the rhythm of life. |

I enjoyed this movie the first time i saw it when it was called Syriana...and i enjoyed it again this time! It had some brilliant plot twists...and the acting was what you would expect from two titans like Crowe and DiCaprio.
Is it a great movie...no its not, but it is a damn fine film the action and mental aspects of the film work well together to tell the story. The character storylines work extremely well and without every character in this film the film just doesn't work right. But again the story is solid and not too predictable and the acting is first rate.
This wont be the film that finally gets Leo his oscar...but it buts him one step closer! |

I was pleased to see director Jonathan Demme return to independent film making (though I admit that I was a bit queasy in the Blair Witch sense from the hand held camera). Jenny Lumet's script is strong and sharp and the dialogue is so natural that much of it felt improvised. For two hours, I felt like I was a part of Rachel's wedding -- sympathizing which every character, feeling like a fly on the wall, watching the train wreck occur before my eyes and being powerless to stop it. This is the best I have ever seen Anne Hathaway. |

TAKE 2
Okay, Just because everyone seems to be missing the point about this film, I'm going to give it an extra half star. The 'handheld' approach has been likened to the blairwitch aesthetic... EEHK, wrong! From a creative standpoint, digital technology was utilized effectively to allow scenes to flourish spontaneously in an improvised/psuedo-documentary manner (think FRENCH NEW WAVE/DOGMA people!!!! Jesus!!!). Contrast that to the demands of shooting on film and its innately limiting qualities.
The other criticism is that the plot revealed very little about the backstory... um, well, that's not the point! I actually would criticize it for having too much exposition, the story is about a character coping with the torturous repercussions of her past amidst the celebratory joy of her sister's wedding. It is not necessary to know EVERY detail about the backstory because it's REDUNDANT. It is a slice of Kym's life in a specific time and place. It is a character study in some sense and what makes this film wonderful is that it doesn't say everything like most conventional stories do.
Lastly, the characters (namely Kym) is said to be egotistical. YES! you got it! She is! that's why she has been having to struggle accepting her guilt, because she thinks the world revolves around her. Her sister on the other hand has to demand attention despite of it being her own wedding because her family is too sensitive to Kym's self-destructive state. That's why it works!
Someone commented that the asian best friends don't get enough screentime while the interracial union isn't explained enough... I have three words: GOD DAMN YOU.
This film isn't for everyone and what saddens me is that it doesn't even require a lot of work for the audience to enjoy. If passive viewing is what you enjoy then go rent My Best Friend's Wedding.
TAKE 1
Kym takes a break from one mental asylum to join another, her dysfunctional family, amidst the chaos of her sister's wedding. Imagine Monsoon Wedding, The Celebration, with a touch of Father of the Bride and what you get is this enjoyable little film. Anne Hathaway's performance has received plenty of Oscar buzz, though I think that's highly debatable, her work here is pretty good. The film benefits from spontaneity and bursts of greatly 'improvised' scenes. That may be in part to director Jonathan Demme's decision to go with Digital instead of film allowing ample room for creative camera movements and the impetus for moments that seem to flourish out of nowhere. The one pitfall of this approach is that the transitions between the scripted and non-scripted elements can feel very awkward at times. It could have benefited even more had Demme used an unknown cast instead of using faces we are accustomed to seeing on the big screen. Buyer beware: there are PLENTY of tear-jerking moments and a lot of crying throughout (a Neddy-No-No for me). A little bit of subtly would have been even more effective. All in all, it is a refreshing take on the dysfunctional family genre in terms of the visual style and the film-making approach making Rachel's Getting Married a lovely piece of work. |

The first 30 minutes of this gritty espionage thriller shows a lot of promise especially with Scott's expertly staged battle sequences. It stumbles after that, in spite of the decent performances by DiCaprio, Crowe and Strong. There's barely any tension felt here even though you know DiCaprio's character is supposed to be in constant danger. A lot of the set-ups fall pretty flat at the climax. At least, it's better than Scott's contrived American Gangster. |

The best part about going to see a movie I have never heard of is that there are no expectations, no big opening or major promotional push or at least not until a week or two before the release.
Flash of Genius is a classic David vs. Goliath battle, a man's invention is stolen and despite many bribery attempts, losing his wife, estranged from his kids for a decade (they came back)l; he is bent on proving that he made this invention and deserves full credit for it. This little guy vs. big guy formula never really gets old when used properly. Greg Kinnear gives a solid performance overcoming the odds and receiving justice.
My big issues with the film were the time jumps. There were at least five time jumps that I would have like to seen a little developed especially when he is in the mental institution. They spent one scene with him and the doctor and he's free. The opening scene was not needed at all and in fact kind of ruined the anticipation of what happen to this man. I think if that first flashback is not this film, it helps the audience feel more for the character rather then knowing right away that something bad happen. That particular opening scene made me not like the film as much because he was already a wreck so after this scene and they go back to when he was a happy inventor family man, I was like, "thanks for ruining the movie." Overall, it is a solid movie of overcoming the odds and triumphant. Try to see a matinee. |

Cute, romantic, and silly, but the film has a boring script. The whole film is just about two emo's, three gay's, a bitch, and a drunk looking for a band named Fluffy. Incredible. I was utterly surprised. It looked entertaining in previews, but I never expected the film to actually SAY something. Let me say this, you may enjoy this movie if: You are sick and twisted, can appreciate disturbing images, and like psychological films that are not, as advertised, a horror thriller, but are social commentaries with much deeper meaning. Luckily, I am all of these. The rape scenes made me cry, the blind couple embracing for the first time made me smile, the "Everybody raise their hand" comment made me laugh.Contrary to everyone else, I appreciated the feel-good ending, because you know what? I, for one, needed a good pick-me-up after the 2 hour long, insane, horrifyingly fascinating journey and I appreciated the twist. As a side note -The abundant amount of nudity was unneeded. |

If you like Snatch you will like this better because you can actually understand the actors without putting on the subtitles. The different parts of the story eventually connect though the 'aha' effect at that point is missing a bit. It would have been nice to see what the picture everybody is hunting throughout the movie actually is about, but Guy Ritchie chose to keep that a MacGuffin (I guess that leaves it to your own imagination what could be a "lucky" picture to a Russian gangster). Anybody else thought that the Russian killer had something of the Black Knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail? |

Due to all the poor viewer reviews for this movie on IMDB, I almost didn't go watch this. Only after a few credible recommendations did I take the step to see "Blindness".
